Kharge defeated his opponent Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor in the Congress president election held on 17 October. In the presidential election, Kharge got 7,897 votes and his opponent Tharoor got 1,072 votes.
Kharge is the second Dalit president of the Congress in five decades after Jagjeevan Ram became the Congress president in 1970. The former Union Railway Minister was born on 21 July 1942 in Bidar district of Karnataka and studied in a Marathi medium government school.
After the election victory, Kharge said the party had set an “example of strengthening democracy in the country by holding corporate elections” at a time when “democracy is at risk” in the country.
He said that Congress has consistently strengthened democracy and protected the Constitution in the country’s 75-year history.
“Now when democracy is in danger and the constitution is under attack and every system is broken, Congress has set an example to strengthen the democracy of the country by conducting constitutive elections at the national level. Thanks to everyone associated with the elections,” he said. .
