The ED alleged that Rs 1.1 crore benefited Raut and his family and the 62-year-old politician would get Rs 2 lakh every month from Praveen Raut. Special Judge MG Deshpande gave ED custody only till August 4. The court said that considering the “volume of the investigation and the case”, it felt strongly that custodial interrogation was necessary.
“It cannot be ignored that chargesheet has already been filed against Praveen Raut..everything is already documented and available for prosecution to investigate. Even the money trail in the bank account of the wife of the accused can be verified by obtaining the bank statement. Therefore, in my opinion, the ED’s long custody for eight days is not warranted… In order to fully investigate the crime, the ED’s prayer for custody should be partially allowed. The accused has been sent to ED custody till August 4.
Raut was produced in the court around 2.15 pm. Before entering the courtroom, he said “amhla sampannach dao ahe” (It is a ploy to eliminate us). The people accompanying him advised him to remove the saffron stole he was wearing around his neck and he became obliged. Heavy security was deployed around the court complex and entry was restricted.
During the hearing that lasted over an hour, Venegaonkar said Raut did not respond to two summons and did not cooperate in the investigation. “During the same period when accused Sanjay Raut refrained from joining the investigation, he involved himself in threatening the main witness (a woman), asking him not to take his name before the ED and further stating that That the previous statements recorded by the ED are under threat and under pressure. Failing to do so may result in rape and murder,” the prosecution plea said.
The time of Raut’s arrest has been mentioned in the remand petition as 12.05 am. Right after the arrest, the ED informed the Rajya Sabha Chairman via email as Raut is a Rajya Sabha member.
During the hearing, the ED said that “Sanjay Raut’s frontman” Praveen Raut received Rs 112 crore from HDIL during 2010. Praveen Raut earlier told the ED that out of this amount, Rs 50 crore was received against the sale of sweat equity and the rest from a land deal in Palghar. However, the ED alleged that Praveen failed to give reasons for receiving such huge money without any investment.
