The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Police said that preliminary investigation has blamed electrical short-circuit.
The statement said the fire started on Sunday morning while the gathering was going on.
Fifteen fire-fighting vehicles were dispatched to the scene to douse the flames, while ambulances took the casualties to nearby hospitals.
The health ministry said ambulances transferred at least 55 injured to hospitals and ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghafar said at least one person had died.
The president’s office said President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi spoke on the phone with Coptic Christian Pope Tawadros II and offered his condolences.
Coptic Christians make up about 10% of Egypt’s predominantly Muslim population.
