New Delhi: BS-VI paves the way for retrofitment of CNG kits in diesel vehicles and replacement of diesel engines with CNG for cars, SUVs and small cargo vehicles. ministry of road transport has notified standards for its type approval and emission norms. These norms are applicable for all vehicles having gross vehicle weight (GVW) less than 3.5 tons.
GVW is the weight of the empty vehicle plus the maximum payload the vehicle is designed to carry.
While the move was expected to gain traction when it was proposed in January this year, considering the prevailing price differential between diesel and CNG at that time, it is now unlikely to find many buyers as CNG prices in the past has increased dramatically. 5-6 months. CNG prices have almost doubled in most cities in the last one year and the current price of CNG in many cities is more than the price of a liter of diesel.
“When the draft notification was issued, it was expected that after retrofitment, vehicle owners can save around 40-50% on fuel expenditure. But now there is no such benefit due to the change in prices. Therefore, the chances of many going for such retrofitment are very slim. Still an enabling provision has been made and if CNG prices fall, people have a chance to opt for it,” said an industry analyst.
He said that with the new rule, commercial and private diesel vehicles registered in Delhi may get some relief. National Capital Region Where it is mandatory for commercial vehicles to be on CNG. Similarly, private diesel vehicles also have a life of only 10 years. So, owners of private diesel vehicles can also go for this option of retrofitment to keep their vehicles for more than 10 years.
