Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again praised India’s independent foreign policy as he slammed the West for criticizing India for buying Russian oil.
Addressing a huge gathering in Lahore, Imran Khan played a video clip of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar from the Bratislava Forum held in Slovakia and praised him for standing firm to US pressure on buying cheaper oil from Russia.
“If India which got independence along with Pakistan and if New Delhi can make its foreign policy according to the needs of its people and can make its foreign policy then who are they (Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif Sarkar) who are walking on the line. Imran Khan said at the gathering, a video of which was shared by several media outlets.
“They (USA) ordered India not to buy oil from Russia. India is America’s strategic ally, Pakistan is not. Let’s see what India’s foreign minister said when the US asked him not to buy Russian oil. “
After this Imran Khan played a video clip of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
“Jaishankar telling them who you are? Europe is buying gas from Russia and we will buy it because people will need it. It is a free country,” Jaishankar said.this is free speech‘),” he said praising India.
He also criticized the Shahbaz Sharif government for succumbing to US pressure on buying Russian oil.
“We talked to Russia about buying cheap oil but this government doesn’t have the courage to say no to American pressure. Fuel prices are skyrocketing, people are below the poverty line. I’m against this slavery.”
The clip of Mr Jaishankar played during the Lahore Jalsa was on 3 June when, in response to a question about India buying Russian oil, he questioned, “Isn’t buying Russian gas funding the war?”
Shri Jaishankar made these remarks at the GLOBSEC 2022 Bratislava Forum being held in Slovakia on the topic ‘Taking Friendship to the Next Level: Alliance in the Indo-Pacific Region’.
He hit back at unfair criticism of Indian oil purchases from Russia amid the Ukraine war, which has hit the world economy.
Defending India’s oil imports from Russia, Mr. Jaishankar stressed that it is important to understand how the Ukraine conflict is affecting developing countries. He also questioned why only India is being questioned while Ukraine continues to import gas from Russia amid the war with Europe.
Responding to a question whether India’s oil imports from Russia are not funding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Jaishankar said, “Look, I don’t want to argue. If India is funding Russian oil, then is funding the war… tell me so buy russian gas not funding the war? it’s only indian money and russian oil is coming to india for war, not russian gas is coming to europe, Isn’t funding? Let’s be a little hands-on.”
