Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy congratulates son-in-law Rishi Sunak
NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Indian IT Infosys Ltd, on Monday congratulated his son-in-law Rishi Sunak on his inauguration as Prime Minister of Britain. Murthy said he hoped Sunak would “do his best” for the country.
“Congratulations Rishi. We are proud of him and wish him every success. We hope he will do his best for the people of the United Kingdom,” Murthy said in a brief statement after it became clear that Sunak, 42, would be Britain’s next prime minister.
Sunak is married to Narayana Murthy’s daughter Akshata Murthy and the couple has two daughters Krishna, 11, and Anushka, 9.
Murthy’s personal fortune is worth more than $4 billion, and his daughter’s 0.95 percent stake in Infosys Ltd is worth more than $750 million.
Sunak and Akshata both held stakes in Murthy’s Catamaran Ventures, but the UK prime minister-designate reportedly transferred his stake to his wife before he was elected as a Conservative MP in 2015.
Sunak and Akshata met while they were MBA students at Stanford University in California, USA. While Akshata went to school in Bangalore, she lived abroad for most of her subsequent life
The couple tied the knot in August 2009 in Bengaluru in a traditional Indian wedding over two days. A reception was also held in the traditional hall at Leela Palace Hotel.
Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, Wipro Limited Chairman Asim Premji, Biocon Limited Chairman Kiran Masumdar Shah and Indian cricketer Anil Kumble attended the wedding ceremony.
