The Income Tax Department said over 4 crore returns were filed through the e-filing portal till Friday for the financial year 2021-22, despite widespread requests to extend the deadline beyond July 31.
“Over 4.09 crore ITRs were filed till July 28, 2022, and over 36 lakh ITRs were filed on July 28, 2022 alone. The due date for filing ITR for assessment year 2022-23 is July 31, 2022. Please file your ITR now; if not filed yet. Avoid late fee,” the department said in a tweet.

ITR filing is an annual activity which is seen as a duty of every responsible citizen of the nation. Taxpayers can claim refund of excess tax paid/deducted during a financial year.
Income Tax Department has set up an independent portal for e-filing Income Tax Returns – incometaxindia.gov.in. Additionally, some private entities registered by the Income Tax Department allow taxpayers to e-file through their websites.
Whereas separately, The hashtag “#Extend_Due_Date_Immediately” was trending on TwitterAlong with widespread requests for an immediate extension with a July 31 deadline.
Taxpayers have requested the government to extend the due date for filing income tax returns as the deadline is approaching.
Several users have complained of technical glitches on the e-filing website. Although, Center has clarified that there is no plan to extend the due dates for filing ITR this year,
Union Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj had clarified that the government has no plans to extend the deadline. “As of now, there is no thinking of extending the last filing date,” Mr Bajaj Told.
