Mani Ratnam’s Ponni’s Selvan: 1 is now the highest grossing Tamil film in Tamil Nadu with over ₹225 crore. At the end of its fourth week run, the film continues to run to packed houses in the state. According to trade analysts, more screens have been added to the film on Friday. Worldwide, the film has collected over ₹480 crore and is set to enter the ₹500 crore club very soon. Ponniin Selvan tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponni’s Selvan), the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947-1014). Jayam Ravi plays the role of Arulmozhivarman and the film also stars Vikram, Karthi, Trisha and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.
Trade analyst Trinath has confirmed that the film has crossed ₹225 crore in Tamil Nadu. “PS1 is unstoppable at the box office. Four weeks after the film’s release, more screens are being added to the film across Tamil Nadu on Friday. The film has crossed ₹225 crore at the ticket window in Tamil Nadu,” says Trinath. He also said that the film has collected around ₹480 crore worldwide.
Industry tracker Ramesh Pala took to Twitter on Friday to report that screens for Ponni’s Selvan have increased in Tamil Nadu. “#Sardhar, #PS1, and #Gandhara will increase screen count in TN from today..,” he tweeted.
The film marks Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback to Tamil cinema after a decade. Aishwarya played dual roles – Nandini and her mute mother Mandakini Devi. Upon its release, Aishwarya’s performance impressed audiences and critics alike.
In a recent conversation, Mani Ratnam had said that the second part of the franchise will hit the theaters in six to nine months and the team is currently busy with post-production work.
