Sonia and Kharge paid tributes to Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary
New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary President Sonia Gandhi on Monday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary.
On this day in 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards at her residence on Saptarjung Road.
Later, Kharge and Sonia Gandhi paid tributes at the Indira Gandhi Memorial.
Rahul Gandhi pays homage at Bharat Jodo Yatra. “The 54th day of Bharat Jodo Yatra started at 530 am in Shadnagar. Bharat Yatris paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel and Indira Gandhi, followed by a 2-minute silence for those who died in the Morbi suspension bridge disaster in Gujarat,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh during the height of the rebellion in Punjab and after Operation Blue Star. A move was made to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindaranwale and his supporters from the Golden Temple of Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab.
Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of the country from 1966 to 1977 and then from 1980 until her death in 1984.
