A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s east coast on Monday, but Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said there was no tsunami and no immediate casualties or damage.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 100 km 44 km (27 mi) south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Russia’s Pacific coast, the Emergencies Ministry said.
Footage released by media from the Kamchatka Peninsula, 6,800 km east of Moscow, showed some cracks in broken bottles on buildings and supermarkets after the quake displaced them, but no major immediate structural damage.
“Operational teams of rescuers and firefighters are inspecting the buildings,” the Emergencies Ministry said. According to initial reports, there was no loss of life or destruction.
The Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that the earthquake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) initially put the magnitude of the quake at 6.6.
The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the earthquake.
