After indictment Trump raises over USD 4 million in 24 hours
Washington, Apr 1 (PTI) Donald Trump raised US$4 million for his 2024 presidential bid in the 24 hours after the former US president was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on charges related to paying a porn star, his office said.
According to the former president’s campaign, more than 25 percent of donations to the Trump campaign came from first-time donors, further cementing his position in the Republican primary.
“This incredible surge of grassroots contributions confirms that the American people view President Trump’s impeachment as a discreditable weaponization of our justice system by a Soros-funded attorney,” it said in a statement Friday.
“With an average contribution of just $34, Trump’s 2024 campaign is funded by an unmatched coalition of hard-working patriots fed up with special interest donors like Soros spending billions of dollars to influence our elections,” it said.
Americans from all 50 states donated to President Trump’s campaign within the first five hours of the “false impeachment,” the statement said.
A grand jury voted Thursday to indict Republican Trump for his role in trying to buy silence over alleged payments to porn star Stormi Daniels.
Trump, the first former US president to face criminal charges, will be arraigned on Tuesday.
The indictment remains under seal and it’s unclear what crimes and how many criminal charges Trump faces.
On Thursday, minutes after Trump’s indictment, the Trump campaign deleted a fundraising email soliciting contributions to the 76-year-old’s 2024 campaign.
It was the first of more than half a dozen fundraising emails sent by the Trump campaign since the indictment.
The White House declined to comment on the accusation against the former president.
“I have no comment on that,” President Joe Biden told reporters Friday.
Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters in Zambia: “I am not going to comment on the criminal case involving the former president.”
Trump, who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, has denied any wrongdoing in connection with the 2016 pre-election payments.
Trump is currently leading the list of declared and potential contenders for the 2024 Republican White House nomination.
Nothing in U.S. law prevents a convicted candidate from campaigning for and holding office — even from prison — for president.
Trump has been impeached twice by the House of Representatives. He was acquitted by the Senate both times.
