Siddaramaiah Chief Minister, Deputy Minister DK Sivakumar: Congress deadlock is over
NEW DELHI: The Congress party on Thursday announced that Siddaramaiah will be the next Karnataka chief minister and DK Shivakumar as deputy chief minister, ending five days of suspense after the party’s election victory. They will be sworn in on Saturday.

Finally, the wait is over. After four days of brainstorming and powerplay by the two main contenders, the Congress top brass has decided on the name of Karnataka Chief Minister. Veteran party leader Siddaramaiah will again be the state’s chief minister for the second time, with state Congress president DK Sivakumar as his deputy.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held in Bangalore on May 20.

After the Congress party’s landslide victory in the Karnataka elections held on May 10, both the leaders came to Delhi to meet the central leadership of the Congress party. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge held several rounds of discussions with the two leaders, but the impasse over power-sharing continued. Both the leaders wanted the coveted top post, but with majority MLAs leaning towards Siddaramaiah, he won support from the party leadership.

Earlier, supporters of DK Shivakumar gathered outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence in Delhi and carried banners demanding their leader’s leadership. His supporters also gathered outside Siddaramaiah’s residence in Bengaluru and poured milk on his posters.
