Congress leader U T Khader files nomination for Karnataka Assembly Speaker post
Bengaluru, May 23 (PTI) Former minister and five-time MLA UT Khader on Tuesday filed his nomination papers as the Congress candidate for the post of Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Khader, MLA from Mangaluru assembly constituency, filed his nomination papers at the assembly secretary’s office in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan and Congress leaders.
The election for the post of Speaker will be held on Wednesday.
By convention, the ruling party’s candidate is usually unanimously elected Speaker.
If elected, Khader will be the first Muslim leader to serve as Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.
Khader has served as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the previous assembly and has also served as a minister in the past. PTI KSU HDA
