Narendra Modi took oath for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister, along with 72 ministers, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday. With this milestone, Narendra Modi (73) equalled the feat of Jawaharlal Nehru, who won three straight terms as India’s first Prime Minister.

While PM Modi has secured another five years in power, this is the first time he will be sharing power after the BJP lost its outright majority in the Lok Sabha after a fiercely fought election.

In keeping with ‘coalition dharma’, the new Council of Ministers will be 72-strong and comprise 11 ministers belonging to NDA partners. The Modi 3.0 team will include 30 Cabinet Ministers, 5 Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and 36 Ministers of State. The portfolios will be announced later.

The Council of Ministers will have a broad representation of social groups, including 27 Other Backward Classes (OBC), ten Scheduled Castes (SC), five Scheduled Tribes (ST), and five minorities. A record 18 senior Ministers will be heading major ministries. There were also a few notable names missing from the new Cabinet.

A Historic Victory Of PM Modi

Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the general elections, reflecting widespread public support for his vision of a “New India.” This third term is a testament to Modi’s enduring appeal and the effectiveness of his government’s policies over the past decade. His leadership, characterized by economic reforms, infrastructure development, and a strong stance on national security, has clearly resonated with a significant portion of the Indian populace.

The Swearing-In Ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the iconic Rashtrapati Bhavan, was a grand affair attended by a diverse array of dignitaries, including political leaders, diplomats, business tycoons, and celebrities. The grandeur of the event was matched by the significance of the moment, as Modi took the oath of office administered by President Droupadi Murmu.

A Diverse and Experienced Cabinet

Alongside Modi, 72 ministers took their oaths, promising to serve the nation with integrity and dedication. The new cabinet is a mix of experienced veterans and fresh faces, designed to address the multifaceted challenges facing the country. Notable inclusions are:

  • Nirmala Sitharaman retains her position as the Finance Minister, expected to continue her focus on economic revival and fiscal reforms.
  • Amit Shah continues as the Home Minister, emphasizing internal security and law and order.
  • S. Jaishankar remains the External Affairs Minister, guiding India’s foreign policy in a complex global landscape.
  • Smriti Irani has been appointed to a dual role, handling both the Women and Child Development and Textiles portfolios, reflecting her strong performance and versatility.

Focus on Economic Growth and Development

In his address following the swearing-in, PM Modi emphasized his administration’s commitment to accelerating India’s economic growth. He highlighted key areas of focus, including job creation, infrastructure development, and digital transformation. The government aims to build on initiatives like Make in India, Digital India, and Startup India to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Social Welfare and Inclusion

Modi reiterated his commitment to social welfare and inclusive development, ensuring that the benefits of growth reach every section of society. Schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (housing for all), Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (clean India mission), and Ayushman Bharat (healthcare for all) are set to continue with renewed vigor. The new government also plans to enhance education and skill development programs to equip the youth for a rapidly changing job market.

Strengthening National Security

National security remains a cornerstone of Modi‘s agenda. The government plans to modernize the armed forces, enhance border security, and strengthen counter-terrorism measures. Amit Shah, as Home Minister, is expected to play a crucial role in implementing these strategies, ensuring the safety and security of citizens.

Foreign Policy and Global Leadership

Under the stewardship of S. Jaishankar, India’s foreign policy will focus on strengthening ties with key global partners, enhancing regional cooperation, and asserting India’s leadership on the world stage. Modi’s vision of a strong, self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) includes active participation in international organizations and a proactive approach to global issues like climate change, trade, and security.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the strong mandate, the Modi government faces several challenges. Economic recovery post-COVID-19, rising inflation, job creation, and managing India’s diverse and often polarized society are critical areas that require focused attention. The new cabinet’s success will be measured by its ability to implement effective policies and achieve tangible results.

Conclusion

As Narendra Modi embarks on his third term as Prime Minister, the expectations are high. With a diverse and experienced cabinet by his side, Modi is poised to tackle the challenges ahead and steer India towards a path of sustained growth and development. The historic mandate offers an opportunity to build on past achievements and lay the foundation for a prosperous future. The coming years will be crucial in determining the legacy of PM Modi’s leadership and the impact of his vision for India.
