BJP lashes out that investor George Soros is targeting Indian democracy
New Delhi: Billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros has come under fire from the BJP for trying to weaken the country’s democratic system. Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani alleged that Soros was not only targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also Indian democracy.
At a press conference held at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi headquarters, Irani slammed Soros as an economic war criminal and one who expressed his desire to destroy Indian democracy. He said Soros wanted a government that would comply with his demands to make his nefarious plans a success.
BJP leader Soros said he has created more than $1 billion in funds to interfere in democratic institutions, including in India, and more than a billion dollars in funding to target leaders like Prime Minister Modi.
Soros had recently addressed the Munich Security Conference, saying the upheaval of business tycoon Gautam Adhani’s empire could open the door to a democratic renaissance in India. He noted that Prime Minister Modi has been “silent” on allegations of fraud and share rigging in Adani’s industrial empire, adding that the Prime Minister should “answer questions” from foreign investors and Parliament on the topic.
The Adani Group has come under intense scrutiny since US short-seller Hindenburg Research accused it of engaging in “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud” for decades. The Adani Group has denied all allegations by Hindenburg Research. However, the Adani Group has lost $110 billion in market value since the release of the Hindenburg Report on January 24.
