England vs Iran FIFA World Cup 2022: England beat Iran 6-2 in Group B opener
England kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2022 tour in Qatar on 21 November with a 6-goal win over Iran in their opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while the Gulf nation held England to 2 goals without a clean sheet.
Iran and England played their first match in Group B at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
England’s 4-5-1 formation was 4-3-3 in favor against Iran. Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock for England in the 35th minute with a classic header in the center of the box. He was assisted by Luke Shaw at the cross.
As England dominated from the start of the game, Bukayo Saka gave it another boost in the 43rd minute when he pounced on a loose ball from a corner. With this, England took a 2-0 lead against Iran.
England’s Raheem Sterling shocked the Iranian players by scoring the team’s third goal as Iran tried to counter their second goal. Assisted by captain Harry Kane, Sterling took the ball with the outside of his boot and England were 3-0 up by then.
With 14 minutes added to injury time, Iran struggled to clear the ball after Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beirenwand collided with teammate Majid Hosseini.
But after the first half, there was a slight change in the game. In the second half, Iran football showed a more aggressive and attacking performance, controlling the English players.
But stopping Bukayo Saka seemed a difficult task. Sakha scored again in the 62nd minute. With the help of Sterling, the Englishman lowered the shot but the ball went straight into the net. With this, the England team took a 4-0 lead.
England’s jubilation was cut short three minutes later when Iran’s Mehdi Taremi broke the deadlock with a goal without giving England a clean sheet.
England are known as a team that doesn’t sit back once their opponents score a goal. They immediately replaced Sakha with Marcus Rashford, who scored for the team in the 71st minute. With this, the England team took a 5-1 lead against Iran.
Undeterred, the Englishman continued his aggressive approach. Jack Grealish scored England’s sixth goal in the 90th minute when he elected to slot the ball into the net. It was his first goal of the game. Even after 10 minutes in the game, Iran could not escape from a heavy defeat against England.
