The official added that five fire tenders took around 30 minutes to douse the fire which broke out around 3 am.
“The fire appears to have started due to electrical leakage inside a garment shop. As combustible materials were kept inside, the fire spread to the adjoining shops. Forensic examination will confirm the exact cause,” he said.
Some families lived on the first floor while the shops that caught fire were on the ground floor of the building.
Fire department personnel evacuated the entire two-storey building, the official said.
An investigation has been initiated into the matter.
