National Science Day 2023: Theme, Significance and Everything You Need to Know
National Science Day is observed on February 28 every year to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman effect’. On this day, the great Indian scientist, C.V. Raman discovered the ‘Raman effect’ and won the Nobel Prize in 1930. The Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
In recognition of this discovery, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed to celebrate National Science Day on February 28 every year. As a result of that proposal, the Government of India accepted it and the first National Science Day was celebrated on February 28, 1987.
National Science Day 2023 Theme:
The theme of National Science Day 2023 is ‘Global Science for Global Wellbeing’.
Who is CV Raman?
Dr. C.V. Raman is an eminent scientist who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from Presidency College, Madras. Apart from working in the government, he participated in many scientific competitions. Later, he received a scholarship from the Government of India.
What is Raman Effect?
When molecules deflect light beams, the Raman effect occurs, causing a change in wavelength. When a light beam passes through a dust-free, transparent sample of a chemical compound, a small fraction of the light is reflected in directions other than the incident (incoming) beam. Most of this scattered light has a fixed wavelength. However, there is a small fraction that has wavelengths different from those of light; This is due to the Raman effect.
National Science Day Celebration:
To celebrate National Science Day, there are public speeches, science films, science fairs and events based on science themes and concepts.
As part of celebrating the anniversary of the world’s greatest discovery, the Raman Effect, the Government of India is honoring scientists who have made significant contributions to science.
