PAN-Aadhaar Link Verification Status: The last date for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) card and Aadhaar card has now been updated to June 30, 2023. All unlinked PAN cards will become inactive from July 1, 2023. Ministry of Finance said. In a release, it said, “The date for linking PAN and Aadhaar has been extended to 30 June 2023 to give some more time to taxpayers so that individuals can report their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for Aadhaar-PAN linking without facing consequences.”
As per Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, every person holding Aadhaar card and PAN card must link these two cards by March 31. Taxpayers can check their PAN-Aadhaar linking status by visiting Income. Tax e-filing portal and through SMS.
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Quick Links’ option on the home page. After this, select ‘Aadhaar Status’.
Step 3: You will be redirected to a page with two fields to enter PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
Step 4: Following this, the server checks the PAN-Aadhaar link status and a pop-up message is displayed.
Step 5: If both the cards are linked, you will get the message “Your PAN has already been linked with the given Aadhaar”.
Step 6: If your PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked, you will see “Aadhaar not linked with PAN. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ to link your Aadhaar with PAN.
Step 7: If the linking is in progress, the taxpayer will see this in their window, “Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for verification. Then check the status by clicking on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on the home page.
Here’s how to check PAN-Aadhaar linking status via SMS
The Income Tax Department has also provided an option to check PAN-Aadhaar linking status through SMS. For this, taxpayers need to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161. If both cards are linked, the message will read “Aadhaar already linked with PAN in ITT database”.
If PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked, “Your Aadhaar is not linked with PAN in ITT database. Thank you for using our services.”
What happens if you fail to link your Aadhaar and PAN cards?
If taxpayers fail to link their PAN and Aadhaar cards by June 30, taxpayers will face the following consequences:
1. Refunds will not be made against such PANs
2. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period PAN is active
3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted/collected at the higher rate as provided in the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Not only this, the PAN card will be reactivated within 30 days after payment of Rs.1,000.
