During a rally in Jharkhand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called out the Congress-led INDIA bloc for its lack of response to derogatory comments made by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant against BJP’s Shaina NC. Modi expressed disappointment over the language used against a woman leader, emphasizing that this silence reflects poorly on the INDIA bloc’s stance on respect toward women.
Modi Calls Out Opposition Alliance’s Double Standards
The Prime Minister highlighted the alliance’s inconsistency in supporting women, contrasting their silence on this incident with their general stance on women’s issues. Modi’s remarks came ahead of the Maharashtra election on November 20, where the INDIA bloc opposes the BJP, aligning with parties such as the Thackeray Sena and NCP.
“Mothers and Daughters Are in Shock,” Says PM
Modi remarked that the public, especially mothers and daughters, feel disrespected by the INDIA bloc’s inaction and added, “People will respond to this disrespect.” He also addressed Congress’s alleged mistreatment of Sita Soren, a BJP candidate and sister-in-law of Jharkhand’s Chief Minister, further questioning the alliance’s commitment to empowering women.
Shaina NC Responds to Arvind Sawant’s Comment
After Sawant’s remarks, Shaina NC responded assertively, saying, “I am a dedicated daughter of Mumbai, not ‘maal’ (goods).” She criticized Sawant’s language as crass and disrespectful, adding that the opposition coalition has shown a lack of respect for women.
Sawant Defends Himself Amid Controversy
Sawant later claimed his comments were misunderstood, stating he did not intend to offend Shaina. He suggested his remarks were taken out of context and reiterated his respect for Shaina, with whom he claimed to have a good working relationship.
Legal Action Initiated Against Arvind Sawant
A police case has since been registered against Sawant, adding a legal dimension to the controversy as the Maharashtra election nears.
