Shinde Defers Decision to PM Modi
Eknath Shinde, leader of a Shiv Sena faction, has entrusted the decision of Maharashtra’s Chief Ministerial post to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I have told PM Modi that I will not be an obstacle. We will abide by whatever he decides,” Mr. Shinde stated, emphasizing his lack of desire for any position and the absence of internal disputes within his faction.
BJP’s Dominance and Fadnavis as the Frontrunner
With the BJP securing a commanding 132 seats in the assembly elections, Devendra Fadnavis is seen as the most likely candidate for the top job. However, the announcement has been delayed, reportedly due to lobbying from Shinde’s faction, which claims credit for the Mahayuti alliance’s victory through its welfare schemes and grassroots efforts.
Parallels with Bihar Politics
Shinde’s supporters have drawn comparisons with Bihar’s political landscape, where Nitish Kumar holds a prominent role despite the BJP’s superior numbers. Some leaders within the faction claim the BJP had assured them the Chief Minister’s position before the elections—a narrative reminiscent of 2019, when similar promises led to a split in the Shiv Sena and a new alliance between Uddhav Thackeray, Congress, and NCP.
Shinde’s Emotional Appeal
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Shinde portrayed himself as a “common man” devoted to Maharashtra. “Since becoming Chief Minister, I have not taken a single day off… I fight, I don’t cry. I will serve Maharashtra till my last breath,” he asserted, reiterating his commitment to the state.
Numbers Game in the Assembly
The BJP, with 132 seats, needs the support of just one ally to achieve the 145-seat majority in the 288-member assembly. While the Shiv Sena secured 57 seats, the NCP won 41. Ajit Pawar has already pledged support for Devendra Fadnavis, further complicating Shinde’s path to a second term as Chief Minister.
