Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said Tuesday that buses run on methanol-blended fuels, like the ones plying in the Karnataka capital, are important for other states also as use of methanol can solve the greater challenge of pollution in major cities across India.

“One year before in Bengaluru, I got an opportunity to start 25 buses by using 15 per cent methanol into diesel. The pilot project was implemented and it proved to be successful. Ashok Leyland and Tata both have trucks where we can use methanol. In Assam 800 tonnes of methanol is available, which is used in petroleum. It is important to use methanol in major equipment, particularly in the Northeast area, which is rich in the fuel. My suggestion to state to state is to plan things based on the fuel available in your respective states,” he said.

Gadkari was speaking at the EXCON 2023 exhibition organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Bengaluru. As part of a pilot project, the BMTC launched 80 buses with methanol fuel and 20 Ashok Leyland buses during the initial phase.

He added, “By embracing the new technology, we can reduce the cost of making double-decker flyovers in places like Chennai and Nagpur. In Pune we are also executing the two-tier system on a single pier in the infrastructure works.”

Also appealed to the construction equipment industry to practise “converting waste to wealth” by adding 15 per cent rubber powder into bitumen to protect ecology and to achieve carbon neutrality.

Gadkari also stressed on the huge demand for mechanisation of road construction with the introduction of new technologies. “The future (of road construction) is now with the precast industry. We just accepted a new technology from Malaysia, which is the reinforcement concrete. Through this, the distance between the two piers during metro construction can be increased to 120 m from the existing 50 m,” he said

The Union minister also urged industrialists to make India number one in the automobile and construction equipment industries. “I am giving you a task that we should make the automobile industry and the construction equipment industry number one in the world in the next 5 years—and I have confidence that the construction equipment industry here can achieve that goal. The industry size is presently Rs 70,000 crore and domestic sale is 1 lakh equipment. Current year-on-year growth in sales is 26 per cent and export is 14,000 equipment and estimated investment from the market is Rs 30,000 crore and this industry creates 30 lakh jobs,” he said.

He also urged higher education institutions, especially the Indian Institutes of Technology, to introduce skill development courses and boost research in construction equipment machinery to meet the demand for certified and skilled machine operators, drivers, technicians and engineers in the country.

Future Prospects:

Inspired by Bengaluru’s success, Nitin Gadkari suggested expanding the use of methanol-blended fuel to other cities and even private vehicles. He advocated for broader adoption across India’s public transport systems and proposed incentives for automakers to produce methanol-compatible vehicles.

“India has the potential to become a global leader in alternative fuels. By embracing methanol, we can drive down our carbon footprint and pave the way for a cleaner, greener future,” Gadkari remarked.

The BMTC, buoyed by the pilot project’s success, plans to expand its methanol-blended fleet. The corporation is considering integrating more methanol buses and exploring other clean energy alternatives such as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Industry and Community Response:

The initiative has garnered praise from environmentalists and industry experts alike. Sunita Narain, Director General of the Centre for Science and Environment, highlighted the dual benefits of methanol as a bridge fuel that addresses both air pollution and energy security. “This initiative aligns with our goals for sustainable urban mobility and should be scaled up across the country,” she said.

Local business leaders and citizens also expressed their support. Rajiv Singh, CEO of a Bengaluru-based tech firm, commented, “Innovations like methanol-blended buses are crucial for our city’s future. It’s encouraging to see practical steps towards sustainability.”

Conclusion:

As Bengaluru continues to pioneer in sustainable transportation solutions, the methanol-blended fuel bus project stands as a beacon of progress and innovation. Minister Nitin Gadkari’s endorsement not only highlights the success of this initiative but also sets the stage for broader adoption of cleaner fuel technologies across India. With continued support and expansion, methanol-blended fuel buses could revolutionize the way we think about public transport and environmental stewardship.
