Google has launched a new experimental AI chatbot called ‘Bard’, a chat service that aims to counter the popularity of the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT tool.

The bard comes less than two weeks after Microsoft announced it would pay billions of dollars to San Francisco-based ChatGPT maker OpenAI and other tools that can write readable text and create new images.

ChatGPT, developed by San Francisco company OpenAI, has caused a stir for its ability to write essays, poems or programming code on demand in seconds, prompting widespread fears of fraud or entire industries becoming obsolete.

Microsoft announced support for OpenAI last month and has begun integrating ChatGPT features into its Teams platform, with expectations of porting the app to its Office suite and Bing search engine.

Explaining Bard, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post, “Bard seeks to connect the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our great language models.”

Google’s announcement comes ahead of an AI-related launch event by Microsoft, and is a further sign that the two tech giants will wage war on the technology, also known as generative AI.

Independent technology analyst Rob Enderle told AFP, “Generative AI is a game changer and, like the rise of the Internet that overwhelmed the networking giants that came before (AOL, CompuServe, etc.), it has the potential to change the competitive dynamics for search. Information.”

“Google is still often the most widely used search engine, and this could change that, relegating them to history,” he added.

What is Bard?

Bard seeks to connect the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our larger language models.

Google’s Bart is based on LaMDA, the company’s language model for conversational applications, and has been in development for several years.
