Cal HC orders CBI probe into ‘attack’ on Union minister Nisith Pramanik in Cooch Behar
Kolkata, March 28 (PTI) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a CBI probe into the alleged attack on Union Home Minister Nisith Pramanik and his convoy in the last week of February in Cooch Behar district.
Petitioner Suvendu Adhikari, leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, alleged in a PIL that Nisith Pramanik, a BJP MP from North Bengal’s Dinhata, was assaulted and stones pelted on his convoy on February 25 when he visited his constituency. .
He prayed for a CBI probe into the attack, saying the state police had refused to register a complaint against the CISF, which was providing security to the minister, and was instead arresting BJP workers.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava ordered a CBI probe into the attack on the Union minister.
The AIADMK also alleged that bombs were hurled at the minister’s car and the vehicle was damaged.
West Bengal Advocate General SN Mukherjee, who appeared on behalf of the state government, opposed the petition and denied the allegations.
In a public interest petition, the AIADMK alleged that the attack was carried out by activists of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
