Success of world in facing climate crisis will in part depend on decisions taken by India: US

The world’s success in combating the climate crisis depends on the decisions taken by India, a senior US official said, as he pledged to work with New Delhi and other countries to achieve ambitious goals.

These comments were made by US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Donald Lew, who in an interview to PTI said the US is committed to supporting the effort through technology and finance.

“I would say (no issues) are more important than the climate crisis. The success of the world in dealing with the climate crisis will be part of the decisions India makes,” said Lu.

“And we have great respect for the Prime Minister’s pledge to build 500 GW of fossil fuel-free capacity in India by 2030,” referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious energy transition target.

“Our teams work together every day on this challenge, and I am very confident that we will achieve these ambitious goals as we work together not just between the US and India, but between India and the rest of the world,” he said.

Responding to a question, Lu said the future of the planet “depends on India’s ability to lead the way” in green energy.

“I like some of the things that leading industrialists in India are saying today, which is that India will only produce enough green energy for itself, that India wants to

be the largest exporter of green energy to the world,” he said.

“This is something that we as concerned about the climate crisis should fully get behind,” Lu said.
