India’s Bindyarani Devi won a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Jinju, South Korea on Saturday.
Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi lifted 194 kg (83 kg in snatch category and 111 kg in clean & jerk) to finish second on the podium.
The Commonwealth Games 2022 medalist started with 80kg. In his second attempt, he lifted a weight of 83 kg. In his final attempt he lifted 85 kg, but it was declared a no-lift.
In the Clean & Jerk, 24-year-old Bindyarani Devi successfully lifted 109 kg and then went up to 111 kg in her second attempt. His third attempt at 115 kg was declared a no-hitch.
A lift of 111 kg was enough for Bindyarani Devi to win a silver medal in the clean & jerk category as well. At the Asian and World Championships, medals are awarded for the Total Lift and Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories.
Bindyarani Devi, who competed in the 59kg category at the 2022 World Championships, returned to the non-Olympic 55kg category for the Asian Games.
China’s Chen Quan Ling won the gold medal with a lift of 204kg (snatch 90kg + clean & jerk 114kg), while Vietnam’s Vo Thi Quynh Nhu won the bronze medal with a record total of 192kg (snatch 88kg + 104kg).
Meanwhile, in the men’s 61kg category B category, Subham Thodkar finished sixth out of nine competitors with a lift of 263kg (snatch 116kg and clean & jerk 147kg).
On Friday, Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu, who returned to competitive action after a hip surgery last December, finished sixth in the women’s 49kg category.
The Asian Weightlifting Championship 2023 is the second in a series of qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalists Jeremy Lalrinninga (Men’s 67kg) and Achinda Shuli (Men’s 73kg) will be in action after the tournament.
