Assam hit by two earthquakes
Two earthquakes measuring 3.6 and 2.8 on the Richter scale struck central Assam on the morning of March 18, an official bulletin said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage from the quake.
The National Seismological Center said the first earthquake, measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 9.03 am and centered at a depth of 50 km near Didabar in Jorhat district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river.
People also felt the tremors in the neighboring districts of Shivsagar, Karbi Anglong and Kolagat. Lakhimpur on the north bank of the Brahmaputra also felt the tremors.
The earthquake may also be felt in the northwestern part of Nagaland, the report said.
A second earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11.02 a.m. The epicenter was at a depth of 9 km near Dalgaon in Darrang district on the north bank of the Brahmaputra.
The quake could be felt by residents of Udalguri, Paksa and Sonindpur districts, while residents of Morigan on the south bank of the mighty river also felt the tremors.
The northeast region falls in a highly seismic zone, with earthquakes hitting the region frequently.
