Thegimpu is the third film of Ajith, H Vinod and Boney Kapoor teaming up after Nerakonda Pravi and Namath. This time, the trio has taken on a heist-action role model and the trailer has definitely created a lot of buzz. Is the film good enough to sustain this or is it just another well-packaged but not well-made product? We can find out.
Story: The movie begins with an elaborate bank robbery scheme hijacked by Darkdevil. Who is this dark devil, what is his connection with the robbers and what was his involvement in this robbery/kidnapping scheme? This is what the film follows.
Shows: Ajith Kumar Steals In Thegimpu ; He makes a grand entrance, swings his leg frequently, sends thugs flying, and moonwalks through the cakewalk of a movie that doesn’t ask much of him. Ajith portrays Dark Devil, a lone mercenary who works as a mercenary, and there is another side to him. Manju Warrier supports Ajith and is a great addition to the cast. Other actors like Samuthirakani and John Kokkan are nothing new and are part of Ajith’s one man show.
Analysis: Thegimpu is a commentary on various things and banks and money is one of them. Vinod tries to ensure that the entire process is not preachy, but Telugu audiences have seen something similar recently. Overall, Ajith and Vinod try to give an innovative treatment to the hero vs. system trope, but stumble at various points due to screenplay and story issues.
