On Friday morning, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference President Omar Abdullah joined the march from Banihal area of the Union Territory’s Ramban district. Scores of party workers lined up on both sides of the Banihal-Noviog tunnel – waiting to welcome and cheer their party leader.
The foot pilgrimage resumed from Chersoo village in Awantipora after it was canceled on Friday due to “serious security breach” and “inadequate arrangements by the Jammu and Kashmir Police”.
Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge on Saturday demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s personal intervention on security lapses. In a letter to the Union Home Minister, Kharge urged Shah to advise the authorities concerned to provide adequate security to the Padayatra led by Rahul Gandhi.
“We expect a large crowd to join the yatra in the next two days and the function in Srinagar on January 30. Senior Congress leaders and leaders of other major political parties will attend the culminating function on January 30,” Kharge wrote in the letter.
