12 Dead, Several Injured As Bus From Pune To Mumbai Falls Into Gorge: Police
MUMBAI: At least 12 people were killed and 27 injured when the bus they were traveling in fell into a ravine on the old Mumbai-Pune highway in Maharashtra’s Raigad district early on Saturday, police said.
A private bus carrying members of a classical music group was on its way from Pune to Mumbai when it fell into a ravine near the Shingroba temple on the highway around 4:50 am, a senior police official said.
The accident was under Koboli police station limits.
The bus carrying members of the ”Baji Prabhu Vaadak Group’, Mumbai, were returning to Goregaon after participating in an event at PimPri Chinchwad in Pune district. The bus left the spot around 1 am on Saturday. At least 12 people were killed and 27 injured in the accident.
Raigad Superintendent of Police (SP) Somnath Kharge said the injured and the dead hailed from Sion and Goregaon in Mumbai and Virar in neighboring Palghar district.
He added that the injured have been admitted to Koboli Rural Hospital.
The dead and injured were between the ages of 18 and 25, Additional SP Atul Jende said.
A local police team and a trekking team are currently involved in the rescue operation, police said.
Koboli town is located at a distance of 70 km from Mumbai.
