Nupur Sharma, threatened by the Prophet’s comments, obtained a license to carry a gun
New Delhi: BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who was suspended last year after his controversial comments about Prophet Muhammad during a televised debate sparked protests and violence, now has a gun licence.
Officials said today that the license was granted by the Delhi Police for self-defence after Nupur Sharma requested it.
He complained of threats to his life after the Supreme Court’s scathing remarks in July called for him to apologize for “burning the country” with his reckless remarks on May 26.
His supporters were also threatened. At least two murders have been linked to the dispute. His supporter Umesh Kolhe, a pharmacist, was killed in Maharashtra’s Amaravati in June. A few days later, a tailor in Udaipur who had supported Nupur Sharma on social media was hacked to death at his shop.
His lawyer told the Supreme Court that there was an “ever-increasing threat to his security” and that it was a “real and genuine threat”.
There are instances of an Ajmer dargah worker threatening to cut her throat on video, and another from UP verbally abusing her and threatening to behead her.
The Supreme Court, in its July order against Nupur Sharma, said: “The way she has stirred emotions across the country. This woman is solely responsible for what is happening in the country.”
The judges added: “She’s really loose-tongued, has made all sorts of irresponsible statements on TV and set the whole country on fire. Yet, she says she’s been a lawyer for 10 years. She should have apologized immediately. Overall for her comments.
