India is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025

India is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, with the inspiring theme of ‘Naya Bharat’, symbolizing the nation’s journey towards a prosperous, self-reliant, and developed India by 2047. This year’s historic event will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi, bringing together ceremonial traditions, patriotic fervour, and a vision for the future.

Theme: ‘Naya Bharat’ and Vision 2047

The central government announced that this year’s Independence Day theme reflects India’s ambition to achieve the Viksit Bharat (Developed India) goal by its 100th year of independence. The theme underscores unity, self-reliance, and national pride, encouraging citizens to actively participate in building a New India.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been designated as the coordinating service for the national celebrations. The programme will feature a ceremonial Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a spectacular flypast carrying both the National Flag and the Operation Sindoor flag — a tribute to recent military achievements.

Ceremonial Arrivals and Guard of Honour

Upon arrival at the Red Fort, PM Modi will be received by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. He will then be escorted by Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, the General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area, to the Saluting Base.

The Guard of Honour — commanded by Wing Commander A.S. Sekhon — will include 96 personnel, with representation from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and the Delhi Police.

Flag Hoisting and 21-Gun Salute

Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist PM Modi in hoisting the tricolour, which will be synchronized with the 21-gun salute by the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial) using indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns.

Following the flag hoisting, the Air Force band will play the National Anthem as flower petals are showered over the Red Fort by IAF helicopters.

PM’s Address and Patriotic Displays

After the ceremonial proceedings, PM Modi will address the nation, reflecting on India’s achievements, challenges, and aspirations. The event will also feature 2,500 cadets from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and volunteers from the My Bharat initiative, forming a human ‘Naya Bharat’ logo on the Gyanpath.

This year, for the first time, military bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, SSB, BSF, IDS, RPF, and Assam Rifles will perform across 140 locations nationwide on the evening of August 15 to celebrate patriotic spirit and honour Operation Sindoor.

Special Guests and Cultural Diversity

About 5,000 special guests from various walks of life, including farmers, teachers, social workers, and achievers in different fields, have been invited to witness the event. Over 1,500 participants from states and Union Territories, dressed in traditional attire, will showcase India’s cultural heritage at the ceremony.

79th Independence Day: Why Not 78th?

Some confusion exists around the numbering of this year’s celebration. While many assume 2025 marks the 78th Independence Day by subtracting 1947 from 2025, the correct count includes August 15, 1947 as the first celebration. Hence, 2025 is the 79th Independence Day of India’s freedom.

Nationwide Celebrations

Across the country, state capitals, schools, government offices, and community groups will hold flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural events. The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign continues to encourage citizens to display the national flag at their homes, promoting unity and patriotism.

From Srinagar to Chennai, the spirit of Independence Day will be reflected in processions, musical performances, and community gatherings, reminding citizens of the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the responsibilities of building a strong and inclusive nation.

As India moves closer to its centenary of independence, Independence Day 2025 stands as a celebration of the past, a recognition of the present, and a pledge for the future — all under the unifying vision of ‘Naya Bharat’.
