Hoshiarpur (Punjab), March 29 (PTI) The Punjab Police has launched a massive search operation in Hoshiarpur village and several adjoining areas following information that radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his aides may be holed up there.
Heavy police security was deployed in and around Marnayan village here, where an elaborate manhunt began on Tuesday night after some suspects abandoned their vehicle following a chase.
“The search is on, but we have not found anyone yet,” said a police officer from Hoshiarpur.
He said that the CCTV footage in the area is also being examined.
Suspecting that fugitive Amritpal and his aides might be in the vehicle, a team of Punjab Police’s counter-intelligence wing chased a car from Bagwara on Tuesday evening, police sources said.
Police sources said the suspects, believed to be three to four, abandoned their vehicle near Gurudwara Bhai Sanjal Singh in Marnayan village here.
A cordon and search operation was launched in and around the village on Tuesday night, with checkposts and barricades erected on roads to nab the suspects.

Against Amritpal Singh and his pro-Khalistan outfit ‘Waris Punjab D’ on March 18, he and his supporters entered the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to free an arrestee and have not been traced since the police crackdown on him nearly three weeks later. Male.
The preacher was snared by police in Jalandhar district on March 18 after switching vehicles and changing his appearance.
Various criminal cases have been registered against him and his accomplices for creating communal harmony, attempt to murder, assault on police officers and obstructing public servants from performing lawful duty.
Amritpal Singh along with his key aide Babbalpreet Singh on social media on Tuesday showed the pro-Khalistan preacher wearing a mask without a turban.
The undated CCTV footage, said to be from a market in Delhi, showed the fugitive walking down the street wearing dark glasses. Behind him, Poppalpreet Singh was seen walking with a bag.
There is no official information from the Punjab Police about the new sightings.
A senior Delhi Police official said they are investigating whether the people seen in the video are Amritpal Singh and his aides.
