Following his impressive run in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja wrote history on the opening day of the 3rd Test in Indore. Spinner Jadeja claimed the crucial wickets of Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith after India were bowled out for 109 in the first innings at the Holkar Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Rewriting history in international cricket, Jadeja equaled Kapil Dev’s incredible feat when the star bowler gave India his first breakthrough in the second over of Australia’s innings.
Jadeja completed 500 wickets in international cricket by dismissing opener Head on the fourth delivery of his first over. Jadeja became the second Indian player to score 5000 runs and 500 wickets in the international arena. Legendary all-rounder Kapil achieved this incredible feat in his iconic international career for Team India. Former captain of the Indian team, Kapil has played 356 international matches and has accumulated 9031 runs and taken 687 wickets.
Jadeja achieved the feat in his 298th match for the Asian giants. The 34-year-old all-rounder is the 11th cricketer to take 500 wickets and 5000 runs in the international arena. Apart from Jadeja and Kapil, the elite list includes Wasim Akram, Jacques Kallis, Imran Khan, Shakib Al Hasan, Shahid Afridi, Daniel Vettori, Saminda Was, Shaun Pollock and Ian Botham.
Talking about the match, Jadeja took the hosts’ first four wickets as Australia were 146-4 in 49 overs before the end of the 3rd session in Indore. Australian opener Khawaja scored a 147-ball 60 to help the visitors take the lead in the first innings. Earlier, Australian Matthew Gunnman took his first 5-wicket haul in Test cricket. Kuhneman bowled nine overs and took five wickets for Smith and Co. in the first innings at Indore.
