Clever Fox Publishing: When and how did you start your writing journey?
Dr. A E Kumar: The thought of writing the book came to me around 10 years ago , but it wasn’t until 5 years ago that I finally put pen to paper. I drew inspiration from various stories I had heard throughout my life and my corporate experience. I couldn’t have done it alone, though. Many people helped me along the way and I made sure to mention them in my book. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to share it with the world.
Clever Fox Publishing: What is your book all about?
Dr. A E Kumar: Connecting Fables with the Corporate World: Insights from the Career of an IIMA Alumnus” is a management book that’s all about my personal journey through the corporate world. In it, I have candidly elaborated on my triumphs, my slip-ups, and the survival strategies that got me through it all. Plus, I’ve linked all of my own experiences with some popular fables that we’ve all heard and read along the way.
I think this book will be an incredible resource for anyone working in a private or government organizations — from employees to executives. And for all the HRD/HRM students out there, this book will definitely give you some valuable insights on how to navigate the corporate landscape.
Clever Fox Publishing: What prompted you to write this book?
Dr. A E Kumar: I firmly believe that life doesn’t offer us a chance for an “action replay”. This is especially true when it comes to our careers. That’s why I decided to write this book — to share my experiences and help others avoid the mistakes and pitfalls that I’ve faced along the way. With my book, readers can learn from my victories and setbacks, making the most of the opportunities that come their way. Let’s make every moment count and never miss a chance to succeed!
Clever Fox Publishing:How was your pre-writing experience? What urged you?
Dr. A E Kumar: After witnessing one too many incidents in the corporate world are based more on circumstances than rules, I realized that I had to share my experiences with others. I started by sharing my thoughts with my colleagues, and it was well received. That’s when I knew I had to take it a step further and share it with a wider circle . And that’s why I wrote this book!. My hope is that it will inspire others to succeed in the corporate world with confidence , even in the face of challenges.
Clever Fox Publishing: How was your writing experience? Smooth or bumpy?
Dr. A E Kumar: As I crystalized the theme, I teamed up with my assistant Mrs. Karuna, and jotted down all the stories. I am not a full-time writer, whenever we were free, I’d dictate, and she’d type the script. No bumps in the road, but it took a long time to complete the book.
Clever Fox Publishing: How much did your publishers contribute? Did they ease the process for you?
Dr. A E Kumar: I pitched my book to several publishers, including Clever Fox. The team at Clever Fox swiftly accepted my manuscript and went above and beyond to enhance the flow and content of my book. Big shoutout to Ms. Reshma, who meticulously fine-tuned my work from the publisher’s end.
They provided me with valuable support and guidance throughout the entire launch process.
Clever Fox Publishing: What is the reaction of your family and friends to you writing this book?
Dr. A E Kumar: Since day one, my family has encouraged me to put my thoughts on paper. As you’ll see in my book, it wasn’t just me who worked on it. My sister-in-law, Mrs. Sujatha, who’s an excellent content writer, went through the script and suggested adding more incidents. Then, a professional editor, Mr. Vijay Kumar, worked on editing it, and my wife, Mrs. Geetha Rani, made sure the flow was perfect. My daughter came up with the book’s title. My son and son-in-law also gave valuable feedback. My family was my rock throughout the entire writing process, and I can’t thank them enough. Once the book was complete, I sent the draft to a few friends who also gave me some fantastic insights. I’ll forever be grateful to each and every one of them for their support.
Clever Fox Publishing: Mention the people who supported you in this journey.
Dr. A E Kumar: My employers and bosses indirectly supported me and helped to inspire the creation of my book, “Connecting Fables with the Corporate World.” By empowering me to work in their organizations and gain real-life exposure that inspired me to write. And then, of course, my family members, the professional editor, my secretary, and everyone else I’ve mentioned, all played crucial roles in shaping my book into what it is today. It truly feels like a baby to me, and I’m so grateful for all the support I received in bringing it to life.
Clever Fox Publishing: How is your book going to impact the readers?
Dr. A E Kumar: My hope is that readers will read my stories and be reminded of their own experiences, comparing and contrasting them with mine. More than that, I want to help people thrive in the modern-day rat race that is the corporate world. I’ve already received feedback from readers who have gone through similar incidents as the ones I’ve described in the book.
I intentionally kept my writing style basic, so that all readers can relate to and understand even the most complicated workplace issues through simple stories. I believe this will make my book an invaluable tool for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of corporate life.
Clever Fox Publishing: How do you deal with negative comments if any?
Dr. A E Kumar: As an avid reader, I know how easy it is to make negative comments. That’s why, as an author now, I’m prepared to accept any constructive criticism my readers have to offer. Of course, if someone is just trying to demotivate me, I’ll ignore their comments entirely.
My Guru, Dr. Soundararajan, used to tell me, “Kumar, if 70% of your decisions are correct and successful, you’re a great manager.” I’m taking the same approach with my book. If more than 30% of my readers have negative comments, I’ll take it seriously and work to improve. But if less than 30% have anything negative to say, I’ll consider it a win and be proud of what I’ve accomplished.
Clever Fox Publishing: Who are your literary mentors and role models?
Dr. A E Kumar: Authors like Mr. Chetan Bhagat, Mr. Ravi Subramanian, and Ms. Rashmi Bansal, all from IIMs, have been an inspiration to me. Even though I haven’t read all of their books, I still consider them my literary mentors.
But when it comes to the actual content of my book, I have to thank all of my employers and superiors over the years. They’ve exposed me to countless business environments, and I’ve learned so much from each and every one. Their guidance and expertise has helped me to write a book that’s both informative and entertaining.
Clever Fox Publishing: What are your upcoming writing ventures?
Dr. A E Kumar: I have two potential book ideas. The first is to write short descriptions about all of the incredible freedom fighters of India. Their stories are so inspiring, and I want to make sure their legacies live on for generations to come.
The second idea is to explore Johari’s Window and its many applications in our everyday lives. It’s such a fascinating concept, and I think there’s a real need for people to understand how it works and how it can benefit them.
Both ideas have their merits, and I can’t wait to get started. I know it’s going to be a challenging journey, but I’m excited to see where it takes me.
Clever Fox Publishing: Any piece of advice for our aspiring writers?
Dr. A E Kumar: If you’re looking to become a successful author, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, choose a theme that resonates with you and allows you to showcase your imagination.
Once you have your theme, it’s important to always keep your reader in mind. Think about what they would want to read, and how you can best deliver that content. This might mean working with professionals like editors and proof readers to make sure your book is polished and error-free.
Patience is the key when it comes to writing. Take the time to craft your sentences, and don’t rush the process. The end result will be a book that readers can’t put down. And don’t be afraid to stick to your own unique style of narration. It’s what sets you apart from other authors, and what will make your book stand out in a crowded marketplace.
