Clever Fox Publishing: Tell us something about your background.
Tezan Sahu: I am a Data and Applied Scientist at Microsoft, working with the Bing Autosuggest team. With a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, I have a keen interest in the world of artificial intelligence and natural language processing. I’m passionate about leveraging cutting-edge to build products & services that solve real-world problems. I am also an Amazon #1 Best Selling Author, for my book “Beyond Code: A Practical Guide for Data Scientists, Analysts & Engineers” which was published in March 2023. In addition, I have diverse interests outside of work such as fine art, singing, writing, and public speaking, which helps me maintain a well-rounded perspective.
Clever Fox Publishing: When and how did you start your writing journey?
Tezan Sahu: I started my writing journey as a technical blogger, where I shared my expertise and experience with others through my articles on Medium. I enjoyed writing about various topics related to MLOps, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and more. I also received positive feedback and appreciation from my readers, which motivated me to write more. I decided to write a book when I realized that there was a gap in the market for a practical guide for data scientists, analysts and engineers who wanted to go beyond coding and learn the essential skills and tools for their career. I wanted to share my insights and tips with them, based on my own journey and learnings. That’s how Beyond Code was born.
Clever Fox Publishing: What is your book all about?
Tezan Sahu: My book is called “Beyond Code: A Practical Guide for Data Scientists, Analysts & Engineers”. It’s a comprehensive guide that goes beyond technical skills to help you develop the non-tech skills and mindset needed to navigate the challenges of the dynamic data science industry. With practical tips and actionable strategies, Beyond Code provides a clear roadmap for career success in data science. The book covers 10 critical strategies to balance technical and soft skills, such as becoming irreplaceable, mastering communication, building a personal brand, collaborating effectively, and thinking like a leader. The book is written with both technical and non-technical readers in mind & is the perfect resource for anyone looking to enhance their skills or pursue a career in data science. Although most of the examples revolve around the domains of data science & engineering, the lessons are applicable across a plethora of other domains as well.
Clever Fox Publishing: What prompted you to write this book?
Tezan Sahu: I was prompted to write this book by my own experience and observation in the data science industry. I realized that technical skills alone are not enough to succeed in this field. There are many other skills and factors that influence the impact and value that one can create as a data scientist or engineer. I wanted to share my insights and tips with others who might be facing similar challenges or opportunities in their career. I also wanted to inspire and empower them to go beyond coding and become well-rounded professionals who can make a difference in the world with data.
Clever Fox Publishing: How was your pre-writing experience? What urged you?
Tezan Sahu: My pre-writing experience was a mix of excitement and anxiety. I was excited to share my knowledge and perspective with the world, but I was also anxious about how the book would be received and whether I could do justice to the topic. I had a lot of ideas and thoughts in my mind, but I also had to organize them and structure them into a coherent and engaging book. I had to do a lot of research and reading to validate and support my arguments and examples. I also had to find a balance between being informative and entertaining, technical, and accessible, practical and inspirational. What urged me to write this book was my passion for data science and my desire to help others who are interested in this field. I wanted to create a book that I wish I had when I started my data science journey. I wanted to offer a unique and valuable perspective that could benefit both beginners and experienced professionals in data science.
Clever Fox Publishing: How was your writing experience? Smooth or bumpy?
Tezan Sahu: My writing experience was both smooth and bumpy. There were times when I felt inspired and confident, and the words flowed easily. There were also times when I felt stuck and frustrated, and the words seemed elusive. I had to overcome many challenges and difficulties while writing this book, such as finding time and energy, dealing with writer’s block, getting feedback and criticism, editing and revising, and publishing and marketing. Writing a book is not an easy task, but it is also a rewarding and fulfilling one. After all, Fennel Hudson rightly said, “Being an author is to have a toe in the creative pool & a foot in the vat of commerce”. I am learning a lot from this process, and I am proud of the final product.
Clever Fox Publishing: How much did your publishers contribute? Did they ease the process for you?
Tezan Sahu: 1. I decided to self-publish the Kindle edition of the book, where the entire designing and formatting was done by me, guided by my mentor Inspiring Jatin. He gave me some valuable advice on how to optimize the book for Kindle devices and readers. Later, I got in touch with Clever Fox Publishing to publish the paperback edition of this book. They have been a delight to work with — both on the publishing and marketing fronts. They took care of the printing and distribution of the book, and they also helped me with the promotion and publicity. They definitely eased the process for me in many ways.
Clever Fox Publishing: What is the reaction of your family and friends to you writing this book?
Tezan Sahu: My family and friends have been very supportive and encouraging of me writing this book. They have been my cheerleaders and my critics, my sounding boards, and my readers. They have celebrated my achievements and helped me overcome my challenges. They have also been very understanding and flexible when I had to spend long hours writing and editing the book, sometimes at the cost of spending time with them. They have been proud of me and happy for me, and I am very grateful for their love and support. In fact, my family called for a small celebration as well when I visited them in Bombay after my book was published.
Clever Fox Publishing: Mention the people who supported you in this journey.
Tezan Sahu: I am grateful to many people who supported me in this journey. My parents, who have always encouraged me to follow my passions and dreams. They have been my role models and my guides, and they have showered me with unconditional love and support. My mentor Inspiring Jatin and his community of authors, who have guided me through the writing and publishing process. He has shared his wisdom and experience with me, and he has been a source of motivation and inspiration. Clever Fox Publishing, who have made the publishing and marketing process a breeze. My friends & colleagues at Microsoft, who have been supportive and understanding of my writing endeavours. They have given me flexibility and freedom to balance my work and writing and have also helped me spread the word about my book. And last but not least, all the readers of this book, who have given me the opportunity to share my knowledge and perspective with them. I hope that this book has been useful and enjoyable for them.
Clever Fox Publishing: How is your book going to impact the readers?
Tezan Sahu: My book is going to impact the readers by helping them develop the essential skills and mindset that are required for a successful career in data science. The book will provide them with practical tips and actionable strategies to balance technical and soft skills, deliver impactful results, and navigate this dynamic industry with ease. The book will also inspire and empower them to go beyond coding and become well-rounded professionals who can differentiate themselves in this highly competitive industry and create their own legacy.
Clever Fox Publishing: How do you deal with negative comments if any?
Tezan Sahu: I deal with negative comments by trying to be open-minded and respectful. I understand that not everyone will like or agree with my book, and that’s okay. I appreciate constructive criticism and feedback, as they help me improve and grow as a writer and as a person. I try to learn from the negative comments and see if there is any merit or truth in them. I also try to respond politely and professionally, if appropriate. However, I also ignore or avoid the negative comments that are rude, hateful, or irrelevant. I don’t let them affect my self-esteem or my passion for writing. I focus on the positive comments and the impact that my book has on the readers who appreciate it.
Clever Fox Publishing: Who are your literary mentors and role models?
Tezan Sahu: 1. That’s a great question. I don’t have any specific literary mentors or role models, but I do admire many authors who have written books on data science, personal development, and leadership. Some of them include:
· Vanessa Van Edwards, the author of “Captivate” & “Cues”
· Ankur Warikoo, who wrote “Do Epic Shit” & “Get Epic Shit Done”
· Simon Sinek, who wrote “Start with Why” and “Leaders Eat Last”
I have learned a lot from their books, and I hope to emulate their style of writing and conveying complex ideas in simple and engaging ways.
Clever Fox Publishing: What are your upcoming writing ventures?
Tezan Sahu: At the moment, I don’t have any concrete plans for my next book project, but I would enjoy sharing my experiences and insights on mindset & attitude with a wider audience — perhaps that could be a potential topic for a future book. In the meantime, I intend to be engaged in blogging, where I explore various aspects of AI, Technology, Mindset & Leadership that fascinate me.
Clever Fox Publishing: Any piece of advice for our aspiring writers?
Tezan Sahu: 1. Sure, I would love to share some advice for aspiring writers. Here are some of the best practices or tips that I would recommend:
· Everyone has a story (in fact, multiple) to tell, and one of the best ways to share it with the world is through writing a book
· Writing about something you’re passionate about never feels like an additional task — it’s more like a blissful escape from the daily grind
· Consistency is the master key that unlocks the door to success, whether it’s writing or life in general. Once you decide to write something, set aside time each day to write, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
· It’s never too early, nor too late!
I hope that these tips will help you in your writing journey. Remember that writing is a rewarding and enjoyable activity that can help you share your knowledge, express your ideas, and make an impact on the world. Happy writing!
