Unseasonal snowfall in Kashmir affects normal life
Srinagar, May 8 (PTI) Unseasonal snowfall in parts of Kashmir brought back winter-like conditions in the valley, while several incidents of stranded tourists and nomads were also reported due to inclement weather, officials said.
Officials said roads were slippery due to early morning snowfall in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Ghazikund areas of the valley.
The meteorologist predicted an improvement in the weather in the next 24 hours, but warned of a chance of cloudburst or lightning on Tuesday evening.
Weather officials said the day temperature dipped to around 12 degrees Celsius against the normal temperature of 24 degrees Celsius.
While the tourists were in for a pleasant surprise due to the snowfall, the locals were troubled by the inclement weather.
Unseasonal snowfall has left many nomads and their livestock stranded. Police and municipal officials rescued more than 250 goats after the animals were stranded on an island in Kurigam in Ghazikund area of Kulgam district due to a sudden rise in the water level of a local stream.
Many nomadic families in the upper part of the district have been shifted to safer places, officials said.
A vehicle of eight tourists, including women and children, was rescued by the police after it got stuck in the snow early morning near the Jawahar tunnel in Ghazikund, officials said.
Rains in most parts of the valley in the last 24 hours and snowfall in some parts have caused the mercury to drop and people have had to take off their winter clothes again. PTI MIJ MIJ NB NB
