6 countries to join BRICS from 2024, PM congratulated for Chandrayaan-3 success
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the 15th BRICS Summit on Thursday, said that India welcomed the expansion of the grouping of world economies. PM Modi’s words of affirmation came after President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa announced the induction of six new member states.
“I am glad that in this 3-day meeting, a lot of positive results have come out. India has always supported the expansion of members of BRICS,” PM Modi said at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.
“I am happy that our teams have together agreed on guiding principles, standards, criteria, procedures for expansion of BRICS,” he said.
“Expansion and modernisation of BRICS is an indication that institutions of the world must get accustomed to changing times,” PM Modi said.
The BRICS grouping is set to invite six nations to become full members, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said earlier today. These countries, namely Argentina, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, will join Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa.
“We’ve reached an agreement to invite Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE to become full members of BRICS. The membership will come into effect from January 2024,” the South African President said.
PM MODI HAILS INDIA’S MOON MISSION AT BRICS
At the summit, PM Modi mentioned the country’s Chandrayaan-3 success and he successful soft landing of the moon mission. On Wednesday, Chandrayaan-3, scripted history as Vikram lander touched down on the Moon surface in the evening.
Speaking about the milestone, the Prime Minister with utmost pride, said, “Yesterday, India’s Chandrayaan-3 did a soft landing on the moon. This is a huge achievement not only for India but also for the global scientific community.”
“It is a matter of pride for us that this achievement is being accepted as an achievement for all of humanity… …On behalf of India, its people and our scientists, I thank the scientists and the world’s scientific community for their wishes on this historic moment..,” he said.
At the summit, PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen holding a brief conversation as they walked to dais ahead of the joint presser.
