Naughty Dog co-head Neil Druckmann revealed in an interview with Buzzfeed that the studio should never release The Last of Us Part 3. The title was attributed to the success of the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us. While both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 are among the best-selling video games of all time, prospects for a third installment are far from assured.

Druckmann, who was involved with the HBO series, has revealed that Naughty Dog is under no obligation to continue the series. He said, “A lot of people are wondering about The Last of Us Part 3 and I know if it’s going to be a thing or not. All I can say is that at Naughty Dog, we’re very blessed that our publisher Sony has supported us every step of the way to follow our passions,” before adding, “Because something is successful, people think there’s this pressure and we have to make a sequel. It’s not like that.”

While that franchise was also successful, Naughty Dog was able to “put our final brush on that story and say we’re done,” he said, referring to the company’s untitled series. We’re moving.” He compared it to The Last of Us, saying, “It’s up to us whether we want to continue with it or not. If we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — like the first and second games, then we’ll tell that story. We can do something. If we can’t come up with one, we have a very strong conclusion with Part 2, and that’s the conclusion.

The news comes after much speculation that Naughty Dog has already set up a story for the third installment of the series, but it appears that is not the case. As of now, the company is working on a multiplayer game system in The Last of Us Universe. Discussing the release, Druckman commented that players will be able to “step into our last world with your friend and experience the tension and horror of that world [as well as] a brand new story and cast of living characters. In another city we’ve never seen before. It’s another part of that universe.” will be chapter.
