Radical Sikh Panjwar shot, here are the 19 still on 2002 list of terrorists India asked Pakistan to return

New Delhi: The killing of Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) chief Baramjit Singh Bhanwar in Lahore on May 6 has brought the list of 20 wanted criminals and terrorists back to light. 2002.

Apart from Panjwar, the list includes wanted criminals and terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, those accused of hijacking IC-814 in 1999 and those involved in the 1993 Mumbai blasts who fled to Pakistan.

Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, 26/11 brain dead and Lashkar-e-Taiba co-founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, Hizbul Mujahideen founder Syed Salahuddin, fugitive Dada Dawood Ibrahim and his key associate Chota Shakeel are wanted. Men.

Starting with Masood Azhar and those linked to the IC-814 Indian Airlines hijacking, ThePrint looks at the whereabouts of some of the others named in the list.

Jaish-e-IM founder Masood Azhar is one of three key terrorists freed by India as part of the hostage-release deal following the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814 by his brother and supporters.

After his release, Bahawalpur-based Maulana-cum-mercenaries formed the JEM, which attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001. Azhar is also wanted for the October 1, 2001 attack on the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly by 38 people. were killed.

In 2008, he was linked to the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. He is also believed to be the mastermind behind the 2016 Pathankot attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.

According to news reports, the Pakistani government has asked the Taliban to find and arrest the JEM leader in Afghanistan. He is still far from being extradited to India.

Meanwhile, Masood Azhar’s elder brother Ibrahim Athar, Zahoor Mistry, Shahid Akhtar Saeed and Azhar Yusuf – IC-814 smugglers – were included in the list sent in 2002. Jacoor Mistry was killed in March 2022 in a firing incident in Karachi. According to reports, Azhar attended Mistry’s funeral.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Athar is also wanted for the 2001 Parliament attack. According to Home Ministry documents, a red corner notice was issued against the Pakistani national in 2020 to bring him to India. In 2020, the MHA declared Athar a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Azhar Yusuf is believed to head JeM’s Balakot camp targeted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in February 2019. According to reports, Shahid Akhtar Saeed has moved from Karachi to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in search of safe harbor.

Former engineer-turned-secularist and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) co-founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed masterminded the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. Initially, he was known to operate from Muridke near Lahore in Pakistan.

In 2020, under pressure from the United States and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a Pakistani anti-terrorism court convicted Saeed on terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to five and a half years in prison.

A year later, Pakistan accused India of carrying out a blast near Saeed’s home in Lahore. After this, the three accused were sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, Saeed is still far from an Indian jail.

Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, who has been in hiding since 1993, is said to be operating from Pakistan. India declared him a terrorist in 2020. In April, two properties belonging to his sons were seized in a terror probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks on security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
