Bengaluru: What began as a joyful evening to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s IPL triumph ended in heartbreak and chaos. A massive crowd surge outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on June 4 led to a deadly stampede that killed 11 people and left over 60 others injured.
In the aftermath, Bengaluru Police have taken swift action, arresting four people including a top RCB official and representatives from DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., the company that organized the event. Authorities have pointed to poor planning, lack of permission, and overcrowding as the primary causes of the tragedy.
Tragic Stampede at Bengaluru Stadium Claims Lives During RCB Victory Celebration
In a shocking turn of events, celebrations over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)’s Indian Premier League (IPL) victory ended in tragedy as a stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and injured more than 60 people. The Bengaluru police have since arrested four individuals, including senior officials from RCB and the event management company DNA Entertainment.
The stampede occurred on Wednesday evening, June 4, when a massive crowd gathered outside the stadium for a celebratory event hosted by the RCB team. The situation spiraled out of control due to poor crowd management and lack of proper authorization for the gathering.
The arrested include Nikhil Sosale, a top marketing official from the RCB management, and Sunil Mathew from DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Two others have also been taken into custody. The arrests were conducted during an overnight operation led by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akshay.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed on Thursday, the charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing grievous injury, unlawful assembly, and negligent conduct endangering human life, under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken swift and stern action. On Thursday, he ordered the arrest of RCB and DNA Entertainment officials and suspended several high-ranking police officers, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda. Additionally, senior officers Vikas Kumar, Shekar H. Tekkannanavar, and Balakrishna have also been suspended for dereliction of duty.
Political Fallout and Official Suspensions After Stadium Tragedy
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has also come under fire. Two key KSCA officials, Secretary Shankar and Treasurer Jayram, are currently absconding, according to the police. Search operations are underway to locate and arrest them.
As per the FIR, the RCB franchise promoted the victory event on social media platforms, encouraging public participation without obtaining necessary permissions from the competent authorities. The unexpected turnout led to massive overcrowding, ultimately triggering a deadly stampede.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government. BJP leaders are demanding the resignations of CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, citing administrative failure. In response, the ruling Congress party has accused the BJP of politicizing the tragedy.
An emotional D.K. Shivakumar, while addressing the press, admitted that Bengaluru’s image had suffered due to the incident. “We lost precious lives and the city’s pride. It should never have happened,” he stated.
Families of the victims have blamed both the authorities and the organizers for gross negligence. “There was no proper crowd control, no barricades, and no police presence to guide the people,” said one grieving relative.
The government has now transferred senior IPS officer Seemanth Kumar Singh to take charge as the new Bengaluru Police Commissioner. He has been tasked with overseeing the ongoing investigation and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, RCB has issued a public statement, expressing deep sorrow and confirming full cooperation with the investigation. “We are devastated by the tragic incident and extend our condolences to the families of the deceased. We are fully cooperating with the authorities,” the statement read.
As the city mourns the loss of lives in what should have been a moment of sporting celebration, questions are being raised over public safety, event approvals, and crisis preparedness. With major arrests made and key players still unaccounted for, the case continues to unfold under intense public and political scrutiny.
