The crowd began to swell early in the day, with over 2-3 lakh RCB fans thronging the areas surrounding Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite a police presence, chaos erupted at Gate No. 7 following rumors of free tickets being distributed. The resulting panic led to people pushing and shoving in a desperate scramble, which soon spiraled into a fatal stampede.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Orders Inquiry
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident and confirmed the death toll, stating, “The pain of this tragedy has overshadowed the joy of our IPL victory. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry, and a report is expected in 15 days.”
He added that the stadium, with a capacity of 35,000, was overwhelmed by the unexpectedly massive crowd. “People broke the gates. No one anticipated such a turnout,” he said, emphasizing that there was no attempt to politicize the Bengaluru stampede, which has left the entire city in shock.
Political and International Condolences Pour In
The stampede has triggered a wave of condolences from political leaders across the country. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge all expressed grief over the loss of lives. PM Modi stated, “The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families, and I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”
Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty also mourned the tragedy. “We celebrated with you yesterday and mourn with you today,” Sunak wrote in a post on X.
Leaders like Ajit Pawar, Hemant Soren, and Abhishek Banerjee emphasized the need for better crowd control measures during public events and offered their condolences to the victims’ families.
RCB Issues Statement; Virat Kohli “Absolutely Gutted”
RCB, the team at the center of the celebration, issued an official statement mourning the tragic incident. “We are deeply anguished… The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us,” the statement read.
Star player Virat Kohli also reacted, posting, “Absolutely gutted. At a loss for words.”
Opposition Blames State Government
The BJP and JD(S) slammed the Congress-led Karnataka government for poor planning and handling of the event. Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy said, “This massive tragedy was a result of poor planning and lack of precautionary measures. The government must take full responsibility.”
Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra echoed similar sentiments, visiting the injured at Bowring Hospital and demanding a judicial inquiry into the Bengaluru stampede.
Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos and Fear
Several eyewitnesses described the horrifying moments as people screamed for help and were crushed in the chaos. “There was no way to move. People were falling over each other,” said a fan who narrowly escaped injury.
A video surfaced online showing fans climbing onto vehicles, with one car severely damaged after supporters jumped on its roof. Other clips showed unconscious victims being carried to safety by bystanders.
