Mr Verma said that as per the Punjab Jail Rules, a convict of good conduct is eligible for general relief.
He will be released from Patiala jail on Saturday, PTI quoted the news as saying.
The Supreme Court in May last year sentenced the 59-year-old cricketer-turned-politician to one year of “rigorous imprisonment” after his party lost the Punjab state elections.
In 1988, the court ruled on a plea by the family of a man who died in a fight with Mr Sidhu and his friend. The family sought a review of the Supreme Court’s 2018 order acquitting him of murder. .
On December 27, 1988, Sidhu got into an argument with Gurnam Singh, a 65-year-old resident of Patiala, over a parking space. Mr Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu allegedly dragged Gurnam Singh out of his car and assaulted him. He later died in hospital.
It was alleged by an eyewitness that Mr. Sidhu Gurnam Singh was killed by a blow to the head.
In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered Mr Sidhu to pay a fine of ₹ 1,000 for voluntarily causing hurt to a person.
The court, however, reconsidered its own order and said it was “appropriate” to imprison Mr Sidhu, adding that “some heinous crime” must be attached to the death of a person.
