Washington, Mar 14 (PTI) Hate crimes in the US are set to increase by around 12 per cent in 2021, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said, highlighting that 64.5 per cent of victims were targeted on the basis of racial or ethnic bias.

In an update to its annual report released on Monday, the FBI also said 43.2 percent of all recorded crimes were related to intimidation.

“Nationally, hate crime incidents increased 11.6 percent from 8,120 in 2020 to 9,065 in 2021,” the FBI said, adding that the updated dataset for 2021 includes all law enforcement agency hate crime reports.

An updated hate crime dataset reports on 10,840 incidents and 12,411 related crimes.

The report said that 12,411 people were affected out of more than 10,500 single bias incidents.

The distribution of victims by type of bias shows that 64.5 percent of victims were targeted due to perpetrators’ race/ethnicity/ancestry bias, 15.9 percent due to sexual bias, and 14.1 percent targeted. Religious affiliation of criminals, report says.

Of the 8,327 hate crimes classified as crimes against persons in the updated 2021 dataset, 43.2 percent were intimidation, 35.5 percent simple assault, and 20.1 percent aggravated assault.

The remaining 70 hate crimes classified as crimes against persons were reported in other categories. It said 71.2 percent of the 3,817 hate crimes classified as crimes against property were acts of vandalism/damage/destruction. A total of 267 additional offenses were classified as anti-social offences.
